Byron Bay may be a beach town at heart, but there is still plenty of things to do when the weather gets cooler. One of the best things to do would have to be whale watching.
From mid May to early September you will see pods of Humpbacks and Southern right whales splashing their way up the east coast of Australia, putting on a magnificent show.
For prime whale watching, make your way to the Cape Byron Lighthouse. It’s here that volunteers gather to help you learn more about the whales, making it fun and exciting for the whole family. Grab a coffee, take in the view and see if you get spot some humpbacks!
If you are an ocean lover, than you will love the idea of sea kayaking. Byron Bay is surrounded by a designated Marine Park, which spans almost 22,000 hectares and is home to a range of marine animals and coral communities.
You can explore the area via boat, you can snorkel, you can dive but one of the best ways to enjoy this beautiful natural spectacle is by kayak. You could hire your own kayak or book a guided tour but either way it’s going to be great way to spend your day.
Hot Air Balloon Ride
The best way to get a great view of Byron Bay and surrounding areas is from above! If skydiving is a little too extreme for you, then perhaps a Hot Air Balloon ride is something that you would rather! This is a great idea for couples on a romantic getaway, or for those of you that want a little adventure in your trip.
A hot air balloon ride doesn’t particularly come cheap, but it is worth every penny. There is a great locally owned and operated company, with extremely knowledgeable pilots offering a stunning sunrise flight! This is definitely something you want to share with your special someone!

This is the perfect opportunity for anyone wanting to immerse themselves among the surfing culture that consumes the area. Byron Bay Lighthouse Walk
If you want to tick a couple of touristy things of your bucket list, then you absolutely must make your way to the Byron Bay lighthouse that is perched atop of a cliff, which just happens to be the symbol of the most Eastern Point of Australia.
If you are up for a little bit of light exercise, then why not take on the Cape Byron Walking Track! A round trip is just over 3 kilometres in length, so give yourself at least two hours to complete the walk alone! There are plenty of scenic lookout along the way for you to stop and admire so be sure to pack your camera!
